Nikki's Trusted Resources

Here are some of the websites and other resources I reference on a regular basis.  That's not to say I agree with everything they say or do, just that I trust the integrity and intent of their endeavors.

Check back frequently, I'll keep this updated with my favorites.

LUNGevity is a wonderful organization that provides funding for lung cancer research.  Lung cancer has historically received a very small share of cancer research dollars, largely because so many cases are preventable through smoking cessation.  With the help of organizations like this one, all lung cancer patients, survivors and caregivers stand to benefit greatly.

Environmental Working Group is another fantastic organization.  Here you'll find tons of information on food and health, farming, energy, the best cosmetics database out there, bar none and all other things health and environment-related.

Dr. Andrew Weill is a leader in integrative medicine and health, and his website is chock full of goodies.  I subscribe to a few of his newsletters as well.

To find existing medical research quickly, I use PubMed.  A quick Google search often pulls up relevant research as well, though you're then left on your own to determine the quality of the source.

The Vitacost website is another frequently visited site for me.  They sell vitamins and supplements and some of my favorite food items, usually at a discount and always with free shipping if you're spending $49 or more.

NPR's food blog is a trusty source for interesting facts and figures and some recipes.

To find a CSA near you, check out Local Harvest.  Even in Rockton, Illinois, the small town where I was raised, there is access to local, organic produce.

My favorite books (I'll add to this list frequently):

Michael Pollan, The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
David Servan-Schreiber, Anti-Cancer, a New Way of Life
T. Collin Campbell and Thomas M. Campbell: The China Study
Blake Mycoskie, Start Something That Matters
Siobhan O'Connor and Alexandra Spunt, No More Dirty Looks
Keith Block, Life Over Cancer
Jack Norris and Virginia Messina, Vegan for Life (I'm not a vegan, but since I don't eat meat, I eat little fish, and don't eat dairy, I find the notes on required vitamins and likely deficiencies useful)

  2. Thanks, Alex! Caldwell Esselstyn is a hero of mine, and I feel guilty I haven't read this book yet. So I will! Thanks for the suggestion.
